Stategic Position

Problem

Patients are often left isolated and alone in hospital settings causing ICU psychosis creating burdens on the hospital system.

Vision

Use augmented reality to help patients connect with family during periods of isolation to help cope with isolation and loneliness combatting psychosis.

Research Framework

Exploring Academic Performance with Elementary School Students on E-Learning Software

We are using two types of research methods to explore and gather information in which we are going to analysis and interpret. We are going to be performing unstructured interviews with a script that encourages qualitative information, but flows like a natural conversation. We are interested in ethnographic information to help us understand behavioural attributes and motivations behind our research proposal.

Research Questions

  1. How does e-learning affect certain personality types?
  2. What is a possible way to combat zoom fatigue?
  3. How can curriculums be regulated in an e-learning environment?
  4. To learn the effects of a 3-hour long zoom class (zoom fatigue)
  5. Learn how to motivate students during an online learning course
  6. Does zoom learning disenfranchise certain personality types?
  7. How might teachers be impacted by online learning; do they feel like they are teaching? Is it as satisfying for them? Enjoyable?
  8. What kind of security and ethical issues may online learners and parents be skeptical about? How effective are e-learning platforms?
  9. Have people had a good experience with e-learning and gaining a strong understanding of a topic through online learning?

ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH PARAMETERS

Purpose of Study

The importance of this research study has been brought to light by the recent global pandemic and development of the virus, COVID-19. Most post-secondary institutions, elementary and high schools have been forced to close campuses. As a result, most learning has been restructured for online deployment. Students and teachers stay home and attend school through their computer or laptop. The sudden change to online learning for millions of students across Ontario has brought up many frustrations and issues for students and teachers. There are many questions surrounding the of functionality of online learning for students with different learning types and some students may not be able to function successfully on an online learning platform. As well, parents may have concerns about the quality of their children’s education if online learning must continue indefinitely.

The study may benefit students, teachers and parents by providing insights to create a more engaging learning experience for students, helping them to succeed in their studies. Parents could have a reliable system to trust their child’s online learning to and relieve the stress and anxiety of their child’s learning at home. Pressure on teachers to make learning more meaningful online learning could also be improved through our research.

Students are in a completely different learning environment when learning from home, and we want to study how e-learning has effected academic performance. There are countless variables to consider so we are going to focus the scope on academic performance and how e-learning has effected that compared to in person class.

Description of Participants

We are going to focus on students in Ontario who are using e-learning as their primary means of education during the Covid19 pandemic. This gives broad range of research participants if we can interview participants in rural parts of Ontario with lower downloading and uploading metrics. We will recruit participants for the study who live in rural areas as well as those who live in more populated regions.

Our research team has four member and we will use our social media networks to recruit participants and use the platforms Facebook and LinkedIn. We are also going to limit the scope of the research study to elementary school. The behaviours and motivations of elementary school students and that of high school are extremely different, so we are going to focus our research scope.

Ethics, not Content, is King

All ethical principles for research will be considered to protect the researchers and the participants. Respect for the individual and concern for welfare are primary concerns for our group over any qualitative or quantitative data produced that is helpful to our research study.

Participants will also have the right to withdrawal from the investigation. If the participants have any psychological stress or are uncomfortable with the study, they will be allowed to withdraw their data. They will also not feel any pressure from the research group in terms of keeping their data in the project even it's considered valuable to the group.

    Student Access

  1. The UI is designed in a three-pronged system, allowing the integration of the LMS with student and teacher portals for optimal user experience based on the preliminary findings of our ethnographic research study.
  2. Teacher Access

  3. The teacher access portal helps bridge the gap between student and parent for easier accountability and technical issues during e-learning.
  4. Parent Access

  5. Accountability platform for students is based upon a dual mechanism for completion via the teacher and student portals.
